A 58-year-old man has been charged following a suspected arson attack at Eden Marine High School, in the Bega Valley, which caused over $160,000 in damage.
Emergency services responded to the fire on Barclay Street at 4:45 am on Wednesday, December 4. Staff members and Fire and Rescue NSW crew members extinguished the blaze, and police later found three Molotov cocktails at the scene. The school was declared a crime scene.
Police arrested the man on Wednesday, December 11, at a property on Emblem Street, Eden, after executing a search warrant. He was charged with break and enter, committing a serious indictable offence, and three counts of malicious damage by fire and explosive.
The man was refused bail and is due to appear at Batemans Bay Local Court today (Thursday December 12).
The fire temporarily disrupted classes at Eden Marine High, with the school closing for three days before students began to return in stages this week. All year levels are expected to be back in class on Friday (December 13).
