Two beaches south of Narooma have been closed after ball-shaped waste debris was discovered along the Mystery Bay coastline.
The debris, spread across 200 metres of 1080 Beach and Pooles Beach, varies in size and shape.
National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff began clean-up efforts on Wednesday (December 11) and have posted warning signs for visitors.
NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA) officers have collected samples for analysis, with results expected to determine any link to similar waste previously found in Sydney and Kiama.
The EPA’s earlier tests on debris in Sydney identified a mix of cooking oils, petroleum hydrocarbons, and decomposing organic matter, but the source of the balls remains unknown.
NPWS will continue to monitor nearby beaches in the coming days.
This marks the first occurrence of such waste washing up on Far South Coast beaches.
